This protocol worked great for local and internal environments, where connectivity is good and there is no threat to security. Earlier Microsoft Outlook used to use the RPC (Remote Procedure Call) protocol to connect to the Exchange server. Communication over any network requires a protocol as it makes sure that the information is being received and sent properly.
